Should be called Limited Review not Beta

I appreciate that this is a free service and that this is not easy to administrator without many limitations in place, but it's pretty impractical to believe that we're trying to beta test something with so many limitations in what we can do.  I can't use profiler, I can't see simple things like dmv's, I can't change CDC settings...the list of I can't goes on and on...  Is there a way to open this up a little bit so that we can actually test things out?  I tried changing simple things like the compatiblity mode, or page checksum, or a simple dmv query to see what queries are running...nothing.  So, thus far, I've been able to create objects in the database, and see that there are some additions to the SSMS and BIDS environment, but other than that, it doesn't provide much value.

Re: Should be called Limited Review not Beta

Hi, it's me again.  And, just so this gets captured somewhere, it should also be called the SQL Server 2008 Database Engine Beta.  Analysis Services, Reporting Services, etc aren't running, so we can't test the rest of the product.  Seems like complaining, I know...but really it's more like clarification of what is available.

Re: Should be called Limited Review not Beta
Don,

I'd like to address some of your concerns. First off, the restrictions that are in place are due to the fact that the beta is hosted in a multi-tenant environment. The restrictions that are in place are extremely similar to those in place on any shared server, at any hosting provider worldwide. Unfortunately, granting users sa rights (to run the profiler,) or allowing SELECT permissions on server level DMVs poses a security risk between users. In addition, I don't think it would be prudent to give all of our users unrestricted access to the same server. . . :-)

Please keep in mind that you can do almost anything within the scope of the standard set of dbo permissions. If there is an action that the db_owner should be able to complete, and you're having problems, don't hesitate to let us know!

As stated elsewhere in the forums, a Reporting Services server is available. Of course, you have user level permissions, and not administrator rights on this server. Integration Services packages and reports can be built, previewed, and tested in BIDS. Integration Services packages cannot currently be deployed to an Integration Services Server due to security risks.

To date, we have not rolled out Analysis Services, due to the fact that it is not built for the multi-tenant environment. While there are ways to compensate for this shortcoming, most of our users have not requested this feature. Of course, if we heard that many of the beta users wanted Analysis Services, we would look into adding it to the beta offering. I'll go ahead and create a new post asking the users if they would like to see Analysis Services added to the beta.

Finally, if you'd really like to test all the functionality, including administrative functions, you may want to take a look at Microsoft's CTP5 VHD - you can use it with Virtual Server, or use a few tricks and tools to convert it to either a Virtual PC or VMWare virtual machine. It is freely available through Microsoft's SQL 2008 Downloads page.

If you should have any additional questions or concerns, feel free to contact us. Thanks!

Ryan

Re: Should be called Limited Review not Beta

Ryan, I can't seem to find out how to run Reporting Services on the server. No IE launch anywhere on the machine. Do I use a backdoor method to launch IE and browse RS as a user? Thanks.

Re: Should be called Limited Review not Beta
Steve,

IE hasn't been enabled on the TS box due to security reasons. However, you can interact with the Report Server through either SQL Server Management Studio, through BIDS, or through IE from your local machine.

The URL of the Report Manager is http://reports01.sqlserverbeta.com/reports

The URL of the Report Server is http://reports01.sqlserverbeta.com/reportserver

You will be able to login with the username supplied in the welcome letter. Let me know if you should have any additional questions or concerns.

Thanks!
Ryan
